Dennis Ritchie, creator of C and Unix, dies at 70

  • Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie, best known for his contributions to computer programming and software such as C programming language and Unix operating system, has died at age 70, according to his longtime employer.

    Dennis Ritchie was found dead on October 12, 2011 at his home in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey where he lived alone. Reports said the cause and exact time of death have not been disclosed.

    Dennis Ritchie was awarded Turing Award in 1983, IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal in 1990, National Medal of Technology of 1998 from President Bill Clinton in 1999, and Japan Prize in 2011.
