PNoy rules out all-out-war vs MILF
PALO, Leyte - President Benigno Aquino III expressed sadness and dismay at the death of 19 soldiers in Basilan following a reported encounter with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) forces.
Nonetheless, he said peace talks with the MILF would continue, saying no one benefits from an all-out war.
"Nakikiramay tayo sa lahat ng mga pamilya [na] nawalan ng kanilang miyembro," Aquino told reporters during the celebration of the 67th anniversary of the Leyte Gulf landing.
He said he was not happy with what happened, adding that he wants the incident investigated. Aquino said lessons should have already been drawn from an incident in July when seven Marines were killed and more than a dozen more injured during a clash with the Abu Sayyaf group.
"Kung maalala n'yo nagkaroon ng trahedya sa ating mga Marines sa Sulu. Merong mga dapat nagawa pagkatapos noon para manigurado na hindi ganito ang mangyayaring trahedya. At nangyari na naman 'to. So hindi talaga ako natutuwa. Gusto ko malaman ang puno't dulo ng buong operasyon na 'to," Aquino said.
Aquino said he has received a preliminary report about the incident and will convene a command conference Friday afternoon to learn all the details as to why government forces ended up in the area and what corrective measures would be undertaken to prevent such incident from happening again.
"Pagkatapos po noon, nag-umpisa nang mag-relieve ng ilang mga commander doon. Pero dapat talagang masiyasat kung ano ang dahilan kung bakit ganito ang naging resulta sa ating Sandatahang Lakas at iwasto. Hihingin ko bukas ang mga detalye ng pagwawasto na kanilang dapat ginawa na noon pa lang panahon ng may trahedya sa Sulu sa mga Marines," Aquino said.
Aquino is ruling out an all-out war against the MILF, saying he would not judge the whole organization because of "one rotten egg."
